Response from Eric Swalwell, Member of Congress. Oct 2013

On October 28th we received the following answer from Eric Swalwell, U.S. Representative from California’s 15th congressional district.

Dear Mr. Goodson,

Thank you for contacting me with your support for the people of Catalonia.  I always appreciate hearing from my constituents, and I am glad to receive your input on this important issue.

As you may know, Catalonia is an autonomous community in Spain and is self-governed.  Catalan is recognized as a nationality in Spain and is made up of four Spanish provinces with a population of approximately 7.5 million people.  The people of Catalonia take pride in their native language, Catalan, which is recognized by Spain as a national language.  Most recently, in 2012, there was a Catalonian independence demonstration, where over 500,000 people called for separation from the Spanish government.

I am a strong supporter of human rights, and I believe that no one should be imprisoned or prosecuted due to their religious or political beliefs.  These are universal values, and the United States should be working to promote them across the globe. Please know that I am working diligently to do my part to improve human rights and freedom around the world.

Again, I want to thank you for taking the time to share your views, and I certainly will keep them in mind.  I encourage you to visit my website at swalwell.house.gov.  On my website, you can view my voting record, sign up for my e-newsletter, and access my Twitter and Facebook pages.  If I can be of further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me.
